A planning guide for external editing drives on Mac and Windows. This is not a speed benchmark or a report that my current drives have already been reformatted. A Samsung T7 Shield can be the right physical drive and still arrive with the wrong file-system choice for a project. Before deciding between APFS and exFAT, ask who must read and write the drive, which application must store its working data there, and whether the only copy of any footage is already on it. Quick answer: APFS is a sensible starting choice for a modern Mac-only editing SSD. exFAT is useful for ordinary file exchange between Mac and Windows. Research-based troubleshooting guide for the Sony A7 III (ILCE-7M3). The example settings are starting points to test, not measured autofocus results.
